Important Information
A-Z of Tāneatua School
Absences
If your child is going to be away from school, please phone the office or use our HERO app (see below) to log their absence. Unless you know how many days your child will be away on the first day of absence, you must advise us every day that your child is away from school. https://our-hero.com/parent-guide
Attendance
Regular attendance (90%+) is critical to our tamariki’s progress and achievement. Our attendance officer, Whaea Lynette, will follow up on daily attendance and we will support you in any way that we can to ensure regular attendance – however, it is your responsibility to get your tamariki to kura. Absences of more than three days without notification will be investigated and may be referred to Attendance Services.
Bell Times
Our school day starts at 9.00am with Hahii Ringatu and our first bell is at 8.50am signalling the assembly time each day. Please ensure that your tamariki are at school by 8.50am, but not before 8.00am

2nd Learning Block – 11.10am – 12.30pm

3rd Learning Block – 1.15pm – 3.00pm
Breakfast Club
We provide weetbix, toast and milo every morning from 8.15am. Breakfast Club is held in the hall dining room.
Buses
Our school is serviced by four bus runs –
– Ruatoki
– Tawera
– Sisoms
– Waimana
Information on bus runs can be obtained from the school office. This will help determine eligibility and confirmation of a place on the bus.
Devices
Our tamariki have access to school devices for their learning – we are not a BYOD school. Tamariki and whānau will be asked to sign internet use agreements for student online safety purposes.
Hāhi Ringatū
Our Tūhoe whānau follow the Hāhi Ringatū faith with Karakia every morning. This is an important part of our day as we believe it prepares us for our mahi and creates the momentum for the day. Every day our karakia is led by our tamariki and serves to strengthen their wairua. It is also an opportunity for them to practice their te reo and further their understanding of their Tūhoe tikanga. While we encourage all tamariki to join in at Karakia, attendance is not compulsory.
Hero App
We use HERO as our School Management System. We encourage all whānau to download the HERO app – it is FREE and connects to the school through the email address you provide us on enrolment. This is where you find information about your child’s progress, their attendance and can advise us of student absences. We are starting to use HERO as a means of communication – school-wide, class and group notices, classroom updates and individual student progress.
Lost Property
Un-named items are held in the office area for one term. At the end of the term, all items are washed and made available to whānau second-hand. Named items are returned to the owner.
Meeting with teachers
Our kaiako and principal are available to meet with whānau before and after school, however it is always advisable to make an appointment as staff have a range of commitments before and after school. You can make appointments to see teachers through the office.
Mobile Phones
Our tamariki do not need mobile phones at school or for their learning. Any phones brought to kura will be kept at the office for safe-keeping. Parents will be required to come to the office to collect them.
Progress Reports
These are available twice a year via the HERO app. This provides information on your tamariki’s progress and achievement, their developing social skills and their attendance.
School Lunches
We are lucky to have an in-house kitchen manager providing lunch in school for our tamariki. There is a new menu every term that is published in the school pānui. Our tamariki enjoy their lunchtime kai – everything from mac’n’cheese to wraps to sandwiches with a piece of fruit, a yoghurt and sometimes some home baking! If your child has any specific dietary requirements or allergies – please let the office know.
Stationery
A stationery list can be obtained from the school office.
Uniforms
Our uniforms are an orange polo shirt with the school logo, black shorts or trousers and a black polar fleece. All items are available through The Warehouse in Whakatane. Please ensure that all uniform items are named for easy return!
